And The Oscar Goes To…

March 8th, 2010

Did anyone catch the Oscars last night? Nope? Me neither. Moving right along. What I did catch though, was Urban Paradise at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, a mix of hip hop and Tahitian dance cultures. That area of San Francisco has to be top 10 in scenic spots in California. Within a 5 minute drive you have a view of the Golden Gate Bridge…

Alcatraz…

and the Palace of Fine Arts.

Any of those would be perfect for your wedding or engagement pictures…wait! maybe not Alcatraz. But two out of three’s not bad… And the more I think about it, maybe not the Golden Gate Bridge either. But there was a couple taking wedding pictures at the Palace of Fine Arts, so one out of three. Still, at the very least, nice places to look at.

The show was in the theater inside the Exploratorium. I hadn’t been to the Exploratorium, probably since my 7th grade field trip. I think as adults we should bring back the idea of the field trip. I guess you could argue that any outing at this age is like a field trip, but I’m talking about really bringing it back. We should rent out a bus, go somewhere historic or fun that somehow integrates a tour guide. Everyone brings a bag lunch and at noon we all eat outside in a quasi-picnic area. It’ll be great. My favorite as a kid was eating lunch on the big whale outside of the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley. But as adults it’ll be even better. No chaperons! We could goof off as much as we’d like. Even better, we could drink before going! Imagine reliving every field trip you’ve ever been on, but with a few cocktails in you. Who’s comin’ with me?!… okay, I’m sorry. I’m getting way too excited and way off subject. Maybe I’ll save this for another post… Back to the show.

I couldn’t get many shots, and the ones I did get were blurry because they were pretty strict about having no “flash” photography. They didn’t say anything about taking pictures without a flash though. Although, eventually I was reprimanded by Mr. Flashlight. I would think it would be more distracting to have Mr. Flashlight waving his light saber at me than me taking pictures with no flash, but that’s just me.

A few of our friends from Otea Api kicked off the show.

It felt quite unique to see hip hop and Tahitian dance mixed in together. It’s like going to a BBQ. You’d be perfectly fine eating chicken all day. You’d also be fine eating ribs all day. But if you have some chicken here, some ribs there, you keep your taste buds guessing. It tastes great and you never get tired of eating the same thing. You know you’re fat when you compare dance shows to eating BBQ.

By far the best part of the show was the music. It’s like the BBQ sauce that brings it all together, adding the flavor if you will.

This has nothing to do with anything, but these little critters were right outside the building, trying to get a seat for the show.
